You’re paying extra for the presentation and the beautiful interior, but you’re also paying for the quality and the food. Gao viet was worth the hype but perhaps a little overrated. For a more casual Vietnamese experience, go to your usual place, but if you want something elevated and special, Gao Viet is it! Loved the banh cuon, could eat a plate of just this but it was great to share. The mango salad was also delicious except the shrimp was really over cooked. Still glad we ordered it though. We shared the chubby pho and the broth was delicious, the noodles were fresh and everything paired perfectly. The star for me though was the soft shell bun rieu 🤤 the flavors were incredible and the soft shell just created the most beautiful texture. It was rich and complex and really special to have. I’d come back just for this dish and be beyond happy.
Thanks for a great meal Gao Viet, service was great as well!
Excellent service, came a bit later so was no wait and no queue. Food came out quickly.
Pha was flavorful and good, but expensive and did not live up to hype. Sure you can over the top lobster and other fanciness, but that did not live up to price with flavors.
Still gonna go back and try some other dishes.
If I could go to this place every single day I would if I lived in San Francisco or in California to be able to go to this place every single day I would holy cow. I mean I love Vietnam food but this is like Vietnam food on steroids. It's so good. Everything I tasted was so good. The appetizers were amazing. The pho was out of this world incredible... And I didn't even realize who the chef was til after and I love him so much. If I saw him there I would have to tell him how incredible his food is and the place itself was charming and beautiful on the inside. I am making this a must stop by if I am ever in SFO again this is a must stop! I am craving it right now damn.
Solid 4.5
At the urging of my friend, we decided to make the drive to SF and see what all the fuss was about regarding the enormous Phozilla bowl designed for up to three adults.
Given my Vietnamese background, I had my doubts about the excitement, but I embraced the adventure. I have to admit that the pho was quite tasty, though not the absolute best — for that, you'd have to head to San Jose or Orange County.
The service pleasantly surprised me; unlike many small Vietnamese eateries, the younger wait staff here were attentive and friendly.
The parking can be a challenge because it’s expected in the city especially in crowded neighborhoods. Overall, we had a great time and would certainly suggest that others give it a shot at least once, if not more to try other dishes.
So this place has been super hyped recently. I came with 2 other friends and the original help time estimate (from the wait-list at the front) was 20 minutes but we ended up waiting 1 hour. Fortunately we could crowd into the bar which is a side room and we watched the heat and Celtics playoff game. Otherwise it was really frustrating. It was 6pm on a Sunday.
When we got seated, we were served very carringly and things were great after that. The food comes out quickly and is as advertised. Large portions that are rather delicious. Come with multiple people to explore the menu. Even their drinks all looked really good.
We stayed a while because after the dinner rush, there were lots of empty tables and things really calmed down. I would recommend coming during an off hour or just being ready to wait 1 hour.
Thank you!
Came in for dinner with a few friends and we LOVED the food. We went early on a Friday night so that we could try to beat the crowd and were lucky enough to be seated immediately.
We got the banh khot mini shrimp pancakes to start, which came out hot and delicious with the dipping sauce! I had the garlic noodle 3-way entree which came with ribeye beef, shrimp and an imperial roll. My husband got the vermicelli bowl and I tried the passion fruit and coconut frozen drink. The portion size was perfect for us but we came to dinner hungry!!
We arrived on Saturday 6:30pm and the wait time was an hour. The food was good but not as good as I hoped. The flavor could be a bit better considering the hype and long wait time. If you wanna wait a bit shorter time, I recommend come after 7:30! The pho was a little too easy to break and the marrow cracker arrived a bit cold and chewy. The beef rib for the big Gao pho was great tho! Overall feels like this place has great concept but the execution can be better.
Had a long wait, since there was no way to reserve a table in advance. Food there is top notch, using the finest ingredients for traditional Vietnamese dishes. Expect to spend at least 25+ per person for dinners.
